Photographic Courses and Training Workshops/Sessions

I run regular workshops and training sessions for photographers, whether at a beginner/amateur level or professional and for societies and clubs. Workshops and sessions usually consist of a small group of photographers being given first hand practical experience.

Following on from the success of our Long Exposure Workshops, we are now offering new workshops to cater for those new to photography or looking to increase their skills in a particular type of work and more importantly improve their photography.

It couldn’t be easier to be on your way to improving your photography with our International Multi-Award Winning Photographer. Simply select your workshop, choose your date and then make your payment. You will be e-mailed your confirmation shortly thereafter and then just wait for the day to arrive.

The aim of this workshop is to show how understanding the RAW process can dramatically improve your images once taken by your camera of choice. By retaining control on how you process the images rather than allowing your camera to choose for you can transform your images as we will show

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 12 participants

So you know how to use your camera and take great pictures? How about how to best process your image? Knowing how to process the image you have taken to get the best quality from it and to really make it stand out is just as important. If you would like to learn how to get your images looking their very best through post-production and the benefits of shooting in RAW, then this workshop is perfect for you. The whole process may seem overly complicated and difficult but we make it easy by showing you exactly the things that matter.

You don’t need the most expensive software out there to achieve this – the techniques we cover can be reused in a variety of applications and we will work through example images throughout the day to show you exactly what the results are. Whats more, you are encouraged to bring your own images (any subject) along so we can work on them and show you exactly the difference the techniques make to your own images. You can bring any of your images along be it landscapes, architectural or portraits.

What will be covered?

  • How to process your images to make them look their best
  • Working on your own images
  • Showing you the before/after as we go along to see exactly what the settings do

The workshop will take place in our premises, with ample parking and facilities to watch the whole process on a large screen.

Questions will be encouraged as we go along and we will ensure you get everything out of the course as you expected. If for any reason, you are still uncertain about anything, we will even get you back in and go over it all until you are happy – you can’t beat that!

Refreshments/teas/coffee are included throughout the evening and you also get post-course opportunities to discuss any questions you have and share/get feedback on your work long after the course is over.

This workshop is aimed at Beginners or those looking for a refresher and is focused primarily on Landscape Photography, although what you will learn is just as relevant to areas such as portraiture/wildlife photography

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 12 participants

Have you ever wanted to learn how to get your camera off the automatic setting and learn how to change settings to get the best pictures? If Yes, then this course is for you… Sometimes the best way to learn is not from a book or manual but to have someone explain it to you in very simple terms and show you exactly what to do.

We will cover the essentials that you need in order to improve your photography by getting the best out of your camera.

We will go through the technical information and apply it as we go along in layman’s terms. We will use our cameras, adjust the settings and take pictures throughout the day so that you can see for yourself what changing settings lets you achieve. You will learn everything from what the symbols on the camera mean, the different types of lenses available and to how to get sharp images.

What will be covered?

  • Basics of exposure, camera modes, focusing, image quality/settings, composition/positioning/framing your photo, equipment (tripods, remotes, flash), use of filters and much more
  • Theory in the morning with practical session in the afternoon – notes will be provided

The workshop will take place in our premises, with ample parking and we will visit a nearby location (within walking distance) to shoot some images outdoors in the afternoon (after lunch). In the event of adverse weather, we have the option to shoot indoors (and keep dry at the same time!).

Questions will be encouraged as we go along and we will ensure you get everything out of the course as you expected. If for any reason, you are still uncertain about anything, we will even get you back in and go over it all until you are happy – you can’t beat that!

Lunch is included as are refreshments/teas/coffee throughout the day and you also get post-course opportunities to discuss any questions you have and share/get feedback on your work long after the course is over.

This workshop will give you practical on-location experience of using 10-stop filters to achieve extremely long exposure landscape and seascape images

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 7 participants

The workshop covers the basics of how to shoot a variety of locations and how best to use filters to achieve very long exposures to give a different look to your images. Locations visited are normally along the East Lothian, Fife coastline or up to Glencoe/Aberdeenshire depending on the time of year (transport included). The day usually starts at early morning, depending on location, and we shoot until sunset after which we grab a well deserved meal (also included) on the way back home so a typical day is around 9 hours but may be much longer depending on the location and time of year.

The cost also includes a follow-up session where we go through the images from from the day and I advise on post-processing, this normally lasts 45-60mins and the session is usually recorded and made freely available as a download to have as a reference. Also included is a mounted A3 print of your favourite image.

What will be covered?

  • Practical on-location session
  • Transport and meals included
  • Follow-up post-processing session

Do I need to bring my own camera?

It would be helpful to have your own equipment, whether it is a Digital SLR Camera or a compact camera, otherwise do let us know and we can look into organising equipment for you. It would be helpful to bring your camera's user manual along on the day with you in case you wish to refer to it during the session.

Compact camera owners should ensure their cameras can be operated off automatic mode to ensure you get the best from the workshops but if you are unsure, just get in touch.

Where will the class be held?

The classes will be held at our location (unless otherwise stated) near the City Centre of Dundee (DD1), with ample parking and full travel information will be provided in advance of the workshop date.

What if I am interested only in taking Landscapes or Portraits?

The information about each course should make clear what the workshop is aimed at but generally what will be covered can be applied to most photography types. For example, learning about exposure and camera modes will apply regardless of landscape or working in the studio (unless you are trying to be creative!)

What do I need to bring with me?

If anything special is required we will let you know otherwise, just you and your camera are all that is needed. It may be helpful to bring the user manual for your own camera in case you need to refer to it.

Are other dates available other than the ones listed?

More dates will be added on a regular basis although if you are a group or organisation that wishes to have a date organised specifically for them, then just get in touch and I can arrange something specific for you.

Information for camera clubs

Can I change the date of my booked workshop to another?

It should be possible to accommodate you on an alternative workshop, depending on availability, however you must let us know no later than 72 hours otherwise you will lose your payment.

Whilst we will try our best to place you on a preferred date, this will only be possible if places are still available on your chosen date.

Can I buy a ticket as a gift for someone else?

Yes of course, our workshops make great gifts for those looking to improve their photography.

When booking, use the name of recipient for our records of those arriving on the day, where possible.

You can also purchase gift vouchers if you would rather have the option of spending the amount on any of our services rather than a specific workshop.

Are the tickets transferrable to another person if I cannot make it?

Yes of course, if you can no longer make it then feel free to pass the ticket on to someone else but do let us know for our records.

Can I cancel my ticket as I or the person I bought for can no longer make it?

Tickets are non-refundable so please ensure you can make the available date before purchasing for yourself or for the receipient.

Do you offer One to One tuition?

One to One tuition is available on request - just get in touch and we can arrange something.

I have another question?

Feel free to contact us with any other questions you may have and we will do our best to get back to you as quickly as possible.
